India thrash England by 66 runs in first ODI

India beat England by 66 runs in the first of three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) at Pune to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

India’s form has continued following their convincing victory in the T20 series. On Tuesday, debutants Krunal Pandya (58 not out off 31 balls) and pacer M. Prasidh Krishna (4/54) played crucial roles with bat and ball in bringing an outstanding victory against the world’s best ODI team.

India scored 317-5 in 50 overs, while England were bowled out for 251 in 42.1 overs.

Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan scored 98 runs to lay the foundation for team India, while captain Virat Kohli continued his T20 form with a brilliant half-century.

At one stage, it seemed that India would not cross 250 runs, but it was KL Rahul (62) and Krunal Pandya (58) who pushed the hosts past the 300-run mark. England all-rounder Ben Stokes grabbed three wickets, while pacer Mark Wood took two.

In response, English openers Jason Roy (46) and Jonny Bairstow (94) provided an excellent start for the visitors, scoring 135 runs in 14.2 overs. When India’s debutant Prasidh Krishna picked up Roy’s wicket, the game shifted in India’s favor. With the exception of both openers, no other England batsman was able to produce a decent innings.

Karnataka pacer Prasidh Krishna became the first player in ODI history to take four wickets, while Krunal Pandya scored the fastest ODI fifty by a debutant. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar continued his excellent bowling, conceding just 30 runs in 9 overs while picking up three wickets. Shardul Thakur took three wickets including the crucial wicket of Jonny Bairstow.

The second ODI will be played on March 26th at 1.30 p.m. at the same venue in Pune.
