Indian Student Arrested in Dublin for Attempted Kidnapping of Five-Year-Old Boy

Dublin: A judge has ruled that Visak Rajesh Leela, a 25-year-old postgraduate student from India, can be named in connection with an alleged attempted abduction of a five-year-old boy from a Dublin apartment building. Leela, who was arrested after a party, was seen allegedly carrying the boy “under his arm.” The defence claims it was drunken, misguided horseplay, but the case will go before a jury to determine whether there was any malicious intent.

Leela was denied bail due to concerns he might flee the jurisdiction, as he has no significant ties to the area. The court heard that he had been intoxicated during the incident and cooperated by providing access to his devices. Despite arguments from his defence lawyer that foreigners are often unfairly considered flight risks, the judge deemed him a flight risk and ordered him to remain in custody until his next court appearance on October 2nd.

The judge also lifted a previous order preventing Leela’s name from being published, emphasising the need to protect the anonymity of the child involved while allowing the media to report on the case. However, Leela’s exact address was withheld due to concerns over potential social media-fuelled threats.
