Dublin: Nurses warn the government that it will not be right if the “unchangeable” policy continues without solving the critical crisis facing the country’s hospitals due to overcrowding of patients. The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organization has declared that a strike will be called if necessary.
Despite the Prime Minister’s and Health Minister’s assurances that they will do everything possible to improve the situation, the government has taken no significant action. In addition, no specific decisions were made at the most recent cabinet meeting.
INMO General Secretary Phil Ni Sheaghdha has stated that they will strike if no significant steps are taken to address the issue. The government should be prepared to pay the price for front-line employees’ words. The General Secretary stated that he does not believe the government will have any other choice but to wait. Working without security will be challenging for everyone.
Nurses are now apologising to patients and their families on behalf of the government. Patients in Ireland do not receive the attention or care they deserve. We must wake up and get to work on this. The General Secretary also stated that the government’s approach of waiting until problems reach crisis proportions cannot be accepted.
