Dublin: The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has urgently called upon the Department of Health to proactively develop comprehensive plans to avert a looming healthcare crisis in Ireland as winter approaches.
On World Patient Safety Day, With over 5,210 patients, among them 100 children, currently being admitted to Irish hospitals without access to beds, INMO General Secretary Phil Ni Sheaghdha has sounded the alarm. She emphasised that this dire situation not only challenges the fundamental concept of patient safety but also demands immediate attention and action from healthcare authorities.
As the winter season approaches, nurses and midwives in Ireland find themselves once again grappling with the challenging reality of delivering care under circumstances they describe as often perilous. Patients enduring over six hours on trolleys face dire conditions, and the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) is highlighting these concerns.
The Emergency Department Taskforce is scheduled to convene tomorrow, prompting the INMO to issue a fervent call to the Health Service Executive (HSE) and hospital groups. They are urging these bodies to collaborate on devising comprehensive plans aimed at enhancing patient safety in the coming months.
The scarcity of nursing staff in the nation’s hospitals has exacerbated the situation, according to the INMO. They emphasise that this shortage contributes to the inability to deliver adequate patient care and are calling for immediate and decisive action to address this pressing issue.
