International Dublin Literary Award 2020 is about to be announced soon. The €100,000 award, sponsored by Dublin City Council, is the world’s most valuable annual prize for a single work of fiction published in English.
Anuradha Roy from Calcutta is an Indian English novelist, journalist and editor. Most of her works depict the atrocities and tragedies faced by women and children in India. Her works, which analyze the hypocrisy of society and the intricacies of relationships, have received much critical acclaim.
Amongst the predominant writes of English literature, like the Booker Prize winner-Anna Burns, the Nobel Prize winner-Olga Tokarczuk and Women’s Prize for Fiction winner-Tayari Jones, this year the Indian writer marked her presence.
The list also includes Canadian Guiller Award winner Esi Edugyan for ‘Washington Black’, US National Book Award winner Sigrid Nunez for ‘The Friend.’
Ten names have been shortlisted for the award and out of which 8 are women writers and that includes the famous Anuradha Roy from India. Anuradha was nominated for the award because of her work ‘All the Lives We Never Lived.’
Other notable novels include An Atlas of Impossible Longing (2008), The Folded Earth (2011), and Sleeping on Jupiter (2015). ‘Sleeping on Jupiter’ won the 2015 South Asian Literary Award for DSC. Received the prize and was nominated for the Man Booker Prize.
The shortlist includes writers from Ireland, Poland, the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Iran and France.
Dublin Mayor and award patron Hazel Chu said the awards were aimed at promoting world literature and Irish writing. The winner will be announced at the International Literary Festival in Dublin on October 22.
The mayor said the International Dublin Literary Award is a great encouragement and appreciation to writers.
