Dublin: New regulations governing learner driver permits in Ireland will take effect on November 1, requiring applicants for a third or fourth permit to have completed a driving test within the previous two years.
Under the revised rules, simply booking a driving test will not be sufficient; applicants must have actually taken the test.
Drivers applying for their second learner permit can do so without sitting a driving test, even if their first permit expires after November 1. However, a driving test must be completed before applying for a third permit.
The third learner permit will remain valid for two years, while the fourth will be valid for one year. Drivers cannot renew their permits beyond seven years or after receiving four permits.
Those who have still not passed the driving test when their fourth permit expires will need to restart the process. This includes passing the theory test, obtaining a new learner permit, completing all 12 Essential Driver Training (EDT) sessions and observing the mandatory six-month waiting period before taking another driving test.
Drivers urged to check permit status
Authorities are advising learner drivers to check their permit expiry dates and ensure their driving test applications are up to date. Applicants whose status appears as “POSDA” (suspended) should log in to their MyRoadSafety account and select “Check Application Status” to update their details and confirm their readiness to accept a test invitation.
Drivers who need to cancel a test because of illness or documentation issues should reschedule promptly. If the Road Safety Authority (RSA) cancels a test, it will prioritise arranging another appointment, although a replacement date before the learner permit expires is not guaranteed.
