Ireland out of World Cup qualification with a huge defeat

Dublin: Ireland will not compete in the ODI World Cup in 2023. The much-awaited Ireland were knocked out after suffering a massive 133-run defeat in the qualifier against Sri Lanka.

Ireland, often the 50-over World Cup stalwarts, failed miserably in the qualifiers. Ireland has failed in all three games so far. With Ireland eliminated from Group B, Sri Lanka, Scotland, and Oman have advanced to the World Cup qualifiers’ Super Six.

In the match against Sri Lanka, Ireland chose to bowl. Sri Lanka produced the same batting performance that hung the Irish bowlers in every way in the first innings. Sri Lanka’s opener Karunaratna (103) scored a century. Later, with 82 off 86 balls, Samarawickrama became Sri Lanka’s saviour in the middle overs. In 50 overs, Sri Lanka scored 325 runs.

In reply, Ireland got off to a bad start. Throughout the innings, Ireland was threatened by the run rate. Ireland tried to play big all the time and kept losing wickets. Not even a single player could cross 50 runs in Ireland’s innings.

Thus, Ireland’s inning ended with just 192 runs. For Sri Lanka, Hasaranga took five wickets. Hasaranga has taken five wickets for the third time in a row. Only Waqar Younis had previously taken five wickets in three consecutive matches.

The Super Six teams of the World Cup qualifiers have been determined with the elimination of Ireland. From Group A, Zimbabwe, the Netherlands, and the West Indies qualified for the Super Sixes. From Group B, Sri Lanka, Scotland, and Oman advanced. The top two teams in the table after the Super Six matches will qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup.
