Ireland Phasing Out Tax Discs with New Vehicle Bill

Dublin: Ireland is transitioning away from the outdated system of displaying tax discs on cars. The Cabinet has approved the National Vehicle and Driver File Bill, although Transport Minister Eamonn Ryan noted that its implementation will take some time.

The new bill aims to introduce a scanning system for registration plates, enhancing the efficiency of road transport. “While a tax disc will no longer be required on cars, vehicle owners must still pay the tax. By scanning the registration plate, we can verify whether the tax has been paid online,” explained Minister Ryan.

Additionally, the Cabinet approved a separate bill enabling gardaí to share more information with local authorities, which is expected to improve communication regarding road accidents.
