Dublin: The Irish government is preparing an ambitious plan to fully digitise citizens’ interactions with the state by 2030, ensuring that all major public services are accessible online. The initiative will be implemented through the Public Services Digital Transformation Fund and will include the rollout of a national digital wallet.
The move follows the Cabinet’s approval of the Digital Public Services Plan, introduced by Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers. The digital wallet will serve as a central platform for citizens to securely access and manage essential public services, marking a major step in Ireland’s digital evolution.
A government spokesperson said the digital wallet will simplify access to key life events — from starting school, learning to drive, and launching a business, to becoming parents and retiring.
All government departments have been instructed to review and amend existing legislation to support the transition and prioritise the development of new digital-friendly laws.
According to the spokesperson, the two core pillars of the initiative are:
- Digitisation of life events, to deliver fully integrated online services, and
- Creation of the national digital wallet, enabling seamless, secure access to government resources.
The government said the plan is designed to reduce administrative burdens, improve service efficiency, and enhance citizens’ quality of life through a unified digital infrastructure.
