Ireland ranks 13th in the world in cost of living

DUBLIN: According to price-comparison website Numbeo, Ireland is the 13th most expensive country in the world to live. The ranking is based on the average price of goods and services in 139 countries.

In this list of 2021, Ireland is ahead of countries like France, Sweden and Hong Kong in terms of cost of living. At the same time, it lags behind Australia, Japan, Norway and Iceland.

Jersey in the Channel Islands is the most expensive place in the world, while Pakistan is the cheapest.

Numbeo compiled the list based on its cost compared to New York City. The US city operates as “100” baseline on the scale. Ireland’s cost of living index is 83.11, 17% lower than New York’s.

Cost of living includes the prices of consumer goods, including groceries, restaurants, transportation, and utilities. But it does not include accommodation expenses like rent and mortgage. Ireland will move up to 10th place in the global rankings if rent is included. With the exception of rent alone, Ireland ranks eighth in the world and fourth in Europe behind Luxembourg, Jersey and Switzerland.

According to property website Daft.ie, the average rent in the State is now about €1,400. In Dublin it is more than €2,000. However, in most counties, rental housing is available for less than a thousand euros.

Ireland ranks 25th in terms of grocery prices. This includes the prices of meat, rice, eggs, fruits, vegetables and alcohol. Ireland ranks 12th in terms of food and restaurant costs alone.
