Dublin: Ireland will not experience a white Christmas this year, according to meteorological forecasts, disappointing those who have been waiting more than a decade for festive snowfall. However, weather experts suggest that snow is increasingly likely around New Year’s Day.
Forecasters say Christmas weather will be calm and seasonal, with no major wind, rain or storm activity expected. Carlo Weather has predicted largely sunny skies from Christmas Eve through to New Year’s Eve, making conditions ideal for outdoor walks and social gatherings. The weather is expected to remain cold and dry as high-pressure systems dominate, with colder air moving across Ireland as the pressure shifts further north.
Ireland’s last white Christmas occurred in 2010, following previous snowy Christmases in 1980, 1990 and 2009. While the country typically experiences a white Christmas about once every seven years, forecasters note that the gap has now grown longer. Snowfall can still technically occur within 24 hours of Christmas Day, but this year that scenario is considered unlikely.
Looking beyond Ireland, meteorologists say there is a greater chance of snow across parts of continental Europe. France could see a white Christmas in some regions, while heavier snowfall is forecast in parts of Eastern Europe.
