Ireland should follow Denmark’s model; Varadkar advised

Dublin: The National Economic and Social Council says that the Denmark model should be followed in Ireland. The Council suggested in a report to Prime Minister Leo Varadkar that the Denmark practise of making vacant residential properties available for rent through councils be introduced in Ireland.

If a person moves his place of residence in Denmark, he must either sell it to someone else or rent it out. Otherwise, if the premises remain vacant for more than six weeks, the owner has to report to the municipal authority. In this way, new tenants will be found and the premises will be handed over.

Last year, the Amsterdam Municipality implemented similar measures. The owner is required to report any unsold or unrented vacant property. Failure to report will result in a fine of up to nine thousand euros from the owner.

The National Economic and Social Council has also proposed that property owners be advised and assisted in rehabilitating and bringing vacant properties back into use, that more professional staff be provided in the public sector, and that old properties be renovated.
