Dublin: Ireland and other European countries will move to winter time at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 26, when clocks will be turned back one hour to 1:00 a.m.
This marks the official end of Daylight Saving Time (DST), which began on March 30. People working night shifts on Saturday will effectively have to work an extra hour due to the time change.
As a result, the time difference between Ireland and India will increase from four and a half hours to five and a half hours starting Sunday.
EU Lawmakers Urge End to Biannual Time Changes
Brussels: Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have renewed their call for the abolition of seasonal clock changes, arguing that the practice is outdated and harmful.
In a letter led by Irish MEP Seán Kelly and signed by 67 MEPs from various political groups, lawmakers urged the European Commission to prioritise the issue in the next parliamentary term.
The letter states that the twice-yearly time adjustments — moving clocks forward in spring and back in autumn — negatively impact public health, safety, and well-being. Research cited by the MEPs links the time change to sleep disturbances, as well as a higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, and road accidents.
The European Parliament had already approved a proposal in 2019 allowing member states to end the biannual clock changes, but the plan has yet to be finalised by the European Council, preventing it from becoming law.
The lawmakers argue that the continued delays are unjustified and that the abolition of clock changes should be urgently brought back to the EU political agenda.
Public opinion across Europe also strongly favours ending the practice, with majority support in several opinion polls for maintaining a single, permanent time zone year-round.
