Irish Gardaí to Receive Body Cameras for Enhanced Personal Security

Dublin: A €2.1 million tendering process is underway to equip Gardaí in Ireland with body cameras, marking a significant step towards bolstering personal safety measures. Initially, bodycams will be allocated to Gardaí across four divisions, with three different tenderers invited to provide Body Worn Camera (BWC) solutions.

The deployment of body cameras will commence as a pilot programme in select divisions, namely DMR South Central (Pearce Street and Kevin Street) and DMR North Central (Store Street) in Dublin, as well as Waterford and Limerick Divisions (Waterford and Henry Street Stations). Dublin divisions will be the first to receive the body cams, with anticipated delivery between March and June, followed by distribution to Limerick and Waterford.

Garda Chief Superintendent Derek Smart emphasised that the introduction of body cameras will not only enhance member safety but also mitigate misconduct, streamline court proceedings, and expedite investigations, ultimately reducing associated costs.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee echoed the sentiment, highlighting the significance of body cameras in combating crime. All footage captured by the cameras will be subject to deletion after a specified period, unless required as evidence. Minister McEntee underscored that the implementation of body cameras will contribute to the safety of both victims and Gardaí.
