Dublin: The Irish Parliament convened today to elect a new Prime Minister but was forced to adjourn amid shouting and heated arguments. Tensions flared as opposition members raised objections over the seating arrangements for independent members, who had pledged their support to the ruling party.
The controversy began when four of the eight independent members supporting the government were seated on the opposition benches and allocated time typically reserved for opposition speakers. This sparked a protest that escalated throughout the session, which began at 11 a.m., preventing any progress on the Prime Ministerial nomination process.
Opposition Standoff and Adjournment
Attempts by the Speaker to proceed with the nomination of a Prime Minister were thwarted as Sinn Féin and other opposition parties united in their objections. The opposition also strongly opposed the Speaker’s proposal to adjourn the Dáil until the first week of February, arguing that such a recess was unwarranted.
Amid the uproar and unrelenting protests, the Speaker announced the adjournment of the session, stating that proceedings would resume the following day, including the Prime Ministerial election.
Reactions from Government Leaders
Micheál Martin, widely expected to be elected Prime Minister, condemned the disruption, describing it as a “subversion of the Irish Constitution.” Simon Harris, another government figure, labelled the day’s events a “complete farce.”
