On September 29, Israel executed a series of airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, intensifying its campaign against Iran-backed proxies in the region. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) targeted military infrastructure, including power plants and a seaport used for weapon transfers. This operation follows earlier missile attacks by the Houthis aimed at Israeli positions, particularly in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The strikes occurred just after the interception of a Houthi missile aimed at Ben Gurion International Airport, coinciding with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s return from addressing the United Nations General Assembly. The escalation in violence has been fuelled by the recent killing of Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, in Israeli airstrikes in Beirut. In the aftermath, the Houthis mourned Nasrallah’s death, and tensions have continued to rise with further Israeli attacks in Lebanon, resulting in multiple casualties.
Additionally, Israel conducted a precision strike against Hamas targets, alleging that they were using a school in Beit Lahiya as a command center. The ongoing conflict has severely impacted Gaza, displacing around 90% of its 2.3 million residents amid nearly a year of warfare.
