Sanaa: Israel has launched a major airstrike on the Yemen capital, Sanaa, killing at least 35 people and injuring 131 others, according to Houthi health spokesman Anis Al-Asbahi. Authorities warned that the death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue. The strike came less than 24 hours after an attack on Hamas leaders in Doha.
The Israeli government said the strikes targeted Houthi military camps, the group’s public relations headquarters, and a fuel storage facility allegedly used by militants. Defense Minister Israel Katz declared that Israel would act “against the enemy wherever they are”, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Qatar to expel Hamas officials, warning, “If you don’t do it, we will.”
The Houthi-owned Al-Masirah television network described the strikes as a direct Israeli attack on the capital. Emergency services, including civil defence teams, ambulances, and rescue workers, continue to search for missing persons in the aftermath of the bombardment.
Just last month, Israeli strikes killed the Houthi prime minister and 11 senior officials in what was described as the most significant attack since hostilities between Israel and the Houthis escalated in recent years. Since October 2023, the Houthis have carried out drone and missile strikes against Israel in support of Palestine, prompting Israeli retaliation against Yemeni ports, power plants, and Sanaa’s international airport.
