Italy and three other EU countries will not become European landing spots for illegal immigrants

Brussels: The flow of refugees is a headache for four European Union countries, including Italy. After this, the countries of Italy, Greece, Malta, and Cyprus tightened their stance on illegal immigrants. They clarified in a joint statement that they will not become European landing spots for illegal immigrants. They also questioned the agreement with Europe to jointly assist asylum seekers.

According to the statement, the idea that European countries are the only safe havens for illegal immigrants cannot be accepted. “Refugees make up a very small proportion of actual arrivals in other EU member states.”

These countries have also criticised the role of private charity ships that operate with the permission of various countries as being capable of rescuing hundreds of people at sea.

Italy’s new far-right government has banned ships from charity groups rescuing migrants from the central Mediterranean. Italy stated that accepting refugees rescued by these organisations was not their responsibility. The countries where these ships are located have a responsibility in this regard.

The previous day, Italy denied entry to three ships carrying migrants. Later, Italy permitted the ships to dock in southern Italy, but only minors and those with health issues were initially permitted to disembark. All were later allowed to enter Italy. However, the Ocean Viking, which arrived later, was denied entry into Italy. After about three weeks at sea, the ship made its way to France. The refugees were finally landed at the port of Toulon on Friday, sparking a diplomatic row.

The French government objected to this. Gérald Darmanin, the French Interior Minister, announced his withdrawal from the Solidarity Mechanism, which was approved in June to reduce the flow of refugees to countries such as Greece, Italy, and Spain.
