Italy won convincingly over Turkey in the opening match of the Euro Cup 2020. The Azzurri made their first move of the tournament by defeating Turkey by 3-0 in a match played at the Olympic Stadium in Rome.
Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne scored for Italy in a three-goal thriller. Another goal in the game was an own goal by Turkey defender Merih Demiral. It was Italy’s eighth consecutive victory under Italian coach Roberto Mancini. Italy have not lost in their last 28 matches.
Both sides in Group A started the game cautiously. However, Italy, who later dominated throughout the match, never allowed Turkey to take control of the game at any stage. After a scoreless first half, all three goals were scored in the second half.
The game’s first goal came in the 53rd minute, when the ball deflected off the body of Turkish player Merih Demiral and into the post while he was trying to block Domenico Berardi’s right wing cross. After the first breakthrough, the Italians sharpened their attack, but Turkish goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır saved a few of their shots with his amazing defense. However, the Turkish goalie was unable to hold off Italy’s advance for an extended period of time.
Italy’s second goal came in the 66th minute, thanks to Immobile’s powerful strike. Italy scored their third goal in the 79th minute, taking advantage of a mistake by goalkeeper Çakır. Lorenzo Insigne, who collected Immobile’s pass, smashed the ball into the right corner of the post to seal Italy’s dominant victory.
Turkey had an opportunity to take the lead in the 35th minute through Burak Ylmaz, but the goal was blocked by Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. But then Turkey could not make a significant move in the match.
The Euro 2020 kicked off with a colorful opening ceremony that lasted about half an hour. Due to the COVID-19 situation, only a small number of spectators were permitted to enter the stadium.
