Dublin: The government has allowed non-EU bus drivers to work in Ireland to help with the region’s recruitment crisis. The Enterprise Department has set aside 1,500 work permits for bus and coach operators. Work permit applications are being accepted from December 2022 onwards.
The Department of Enterprise requires that drivers receive a minimum annual salary of €30,000 on a 39-hour week basis and hold driving licence categories D, DE, D1, D1E or an equivalent qualification.
Dermot O’Leary, general secretary of the National Bus & Rail Union (NBRU), stated that bus operators, including Dublin Bus, are currently facing a recruitment and retention crisis, which is affecting passenger services.
This crisis has an impact on many sectors of the economy. “The hotel and restaurant industries are all facing the same problem: they can’t find workers,” he explained. “Bus services are now available 24 hours a day, but due to a driver shortage, the existing staff must work around the clock,” Dermot O’Leary explained.
There are numerous openings in the country for heavy truck drivers.
Train driver positions are also available.
Irish Rail is also currently recruiting for train drivers who are current residents of Ireland. There are approximately 80 job openings reported. The eligible candidates who apply first are chosen. A link is added below:
