Dublin: Ireland needs thousands of workers, including experts in the construction sector, according to a government report. Along with that, there are vacancies for builders. The Residential Construction and Retrofitting 2023–2030 report warns that if we get builders but not enough workers, none of the construction projects targeted by the country will see the light of day.
According to the report, the construction sector requires an additional 50,831 people in managerial, professional, skilled, and semi-skilled categories. This is in addition to the 81,000 workers required by the National Development Plan to complete various construction projects. The most serious issue is a lack of professional workers.
According to the Construction Industry Federation, it is extremely difficult to find skilled workers such as civil engineers, bricklayers, painters, and plasterers.
The CSO estimates that there are currently 1,63,300 construction workers in Ireland, accounting for 6.4 percent of the country’s workforce. Even though there are so many vacancies in the employment sector, the government does not have any policy clarity on how to fill them.
Political parties, government agencies, and other organisations have yet to make concrete proposals to address this issue. There needs to be a systematic plan and scheme to bring back those who have moved from the construction sector to various occupations and those who have gone to other places. There is also an opinion that there should be a change in the PR laws, etc.
