Dublin: Ireland needs thousands of childcare workers, study finds. Many child care organisations, like the aged care sector, are understaffed. The sector is experiencing a recruitment crisis, and the trade union SIPTU has demanded that the current minimum hourly wage be increased by at least two euros in order to attract workers.
The union wants to raise the minimum hourly wage from €13 to €15.
Members of the Joint Labour Committee (JLC) and unions are meeting today to discuss a review of the Employment Regulation Order (ERO) for the childcare sector. “The crisis is also brewing in the services sector as employers struggle to recruit and retain staff,” said Darragh O’Connor, SIPTU’s Head of Strategic Organisation and Campaigning.

This is despite record funds being allocated by the government. Childcare centres have warned that parents will have to pay higher fees to meet salary claims that exceed the rate of inflation.
