Launching Grants of up to €50,000 through councils to renovate and buy older homes

DUBLIN: The government plans to make €150 million available through councils to refurbish empty buildings in cities and villages.

The councils will take the lead in renovating and distributing such properties to those in need, with the aim of increasing the number of houses on the market.

Minister Darragh O’Brien said it would “allow councils to refurbish and hand over long-vacant properties without external financial burdens.”

The housing department has already instructed councils to issue compulsory purchase orders (CPOs) for old and dilapidated properties.

Junior Housing Minister Kieran O’Donnell also announced that under the Croi Cónaithe scheme, derelict homes and apartments will receive grants of up to €50,000 to be refurbished.
