Dublin: Fine Gael’s presidential candidate Mairead McGuinness has announced her withdrawal from the upcoming election, citing health concerns following a recent hospital stay.
In a statement, the former MEP and EU Commissioner said the decision was made on medical advice: “My priority now is my health. With the election only months away, I do not have the strength to give the campaign my all.” She thanked Fine Gael leader Simon Harris, party colleagues, and supporters, asking for privacy in the weeks ahead.
Mr Harris described her withdrawal as “an awful shock” and praised her “incredible contribution to public life in Ireland and Europe”, stressing that her health must come first.
Fine Gael’s Executive Council will meet in the coming days to decide on the party’s next steps, according to Director of Elections Martin Heydon.
Independent TD Catherine Connolly, also running for president, said the decision came as “a shock” and extended her best wishes to Ms McGuinness and her family.
