The company disclosed that an individual, acting on behalf of the company, may have illicitly accessed customer accounts, leading to the unauthorised use of personal and financial information.
Approximately 8,000 customer accounts are suspected to have been affected, prompting Electric Ireland to dispatch letters to potentially impacted customers. These letters aim to inform customers of the situation and offer guidance on the necessary steps to mitigate the risks associated with financial fraud. The company strongly advises recipients of the letter to exercise caution and take proactive measures to safeguard themselves against potential scams.
Electric Ireland further recommends that affected customers promptly cancel credit or debit cards used for bill payments to other utilities. Additionally, customers are urged to review their bank and credit card statements from October 2021, identifying any suspicious activities and reporting them accordingly.
In response to the data breach, Electric Ireland underscores the importance of securing financial accounts, emphasising actions such as password changes and heightened vigilance against unusual activities or unsolicited calls. The company is actively cooperating with law enforcement agencies, including An Garda Síochána and the Data Protection Commissioner, to investigate the matter.
While the investigation is ongoing, Electric Ireland assures affected customers that they will be contacted directly if any fraudulent activity on their financial accounts is detected.
