Dublin: In a significant announcement, Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has shed light on the predominant route of illegal immigration into the Republic, revealing that the majority of such occurrences stem from Northern Ireland. In response to this revelation, Varadkar has pledged to implement measures aimed at bolstering border checks across the country.
Varadkar emphasised the necessity of fortifying Ireland’s borders within the broader context of European Union security. He underscored that the influx of individuals seeking international protection via routes originating from the UK and other European nations is not conducive to Ireland’s immigration policies.
The Prime Minister outlined plans to promote legal immigration avenues, emphasising the importance of obtaining work permits and visas as the sanctioned means of entry into the country. Varadkar reiterated Ireland’s stance against illegal immigration, signalling stringent restrictions, including enhanced surveillance at airports, to curb unlawful travel activities.
In light of escalating refugee numbers, Varadkar acknowledged the challenges associated with accommodating all arrivals, highlighting the limitations imposed by resource constraints. He stressed that while factors such as poverty, climate change, and conflict contribute to the surge in illegal immigration across Europe and the US, Ireland does not extend invitations to such individuals.
