Dublin: A growing number of young people in Ireland are contemplating emigration due to what they describe as “unsustainable circumstances,” according to new research by the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI).
A Red C poll, conducted between July 31 and August 5, found that three in five people under 25 are considering moving abroad to secure a better quality of life. Of these, one in three say they are firmly committed to leaving.
The study reveals widespread frustration among young people who are struggling with high housing and rental costs, forcing many to remain living with their parents into adulthood.
Housing Crisis at the Core
The survey highlights housing as the single greatest factor driving emigration.
- 84% of respondents said the housing crisis affects every age group, up from 82% last year.
- 94% of full-time students said rent and accommodation are a major financial burden.
Other Pressures
Beyond housing, respondents identified several additional challenges:
- Education costs: 60%
- Groceries and daily essentials: 47%
- Healthcare: 26%
The findings also show:
- 82% of 18–24-year-olds say they cannot cope with rising costs.
- 81% are fearful about the future.
- Two in three believe they could build a better life abroad.
- 79% of young people feel the government is not doing enough to support them.
- Only 13% believe their needs are being met.
Calls for Urgent Action
Catherine Walsh, NYCI’s Director of Policy and Advocacy, said the findings illustrate a crisis of confidence among young people about their future in Ireland.
“This research demonstrates that young people feel Ireland is not a place where they can build a life. The upcoming budget must address the cost-of-living pressures they face and restore hope,” she said.
As part of its pre-budget submission, the NYCI has called for:
- Equalising the Jobseeker’s Allowance for under-25s.
- Ending sub-minimum wage rates for young workers.
- Introducing free public transport for those under 25.
