Oslo: Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her unwavering commitment to human rights and democratic reform in Venezuela.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee commended Machado, 58, for her “extraordinary courage” in standing up for the Venezuelan people and advocating a peaceful transition to democracy, despite facing years of political persecution and personal risk.
Born in Caracas in 1967, Machado studied engineering at Andrés Bello Catholic University and finance at IESA, later joining the Yale World Fellows Programme in 2009 to broaden her global perspective.
She co-founded Súmate, a civic organization promoting transparent elections, and was elected to Venezuela’s National Assembly in 2010. After being expelled in 2014, she continued her activism through Vente Venezuela and later founded Soy Venezuela, a platform uniting citizens in support of democratic change.
