Mayo: A couple who subjected their six children to sustained physical and emotional abuse over several years have been sentenced to prison by Castlebar Circuit Court.
The 50-year-old father received a sentence of five-and-a-half years’ imprisonment, while the 40-year-old mother was sentenced to three years. The children, aged between one and 17 at the time of the offences, were left with lasting psychological and physical trauma as a result of the abuse.
Delivering her judgment, Judge Sinéad McMullen said the level of harm inflicted on the children was “immeasurable”, noting that their own home had ceased to be a place of safety and that they were left without adults willing to protect them.
The court heard that between January 2018 and October 2021 the children were subjected to repeated cruelty, including physical assaults, shouting, threats and indecent abuse. Evidence showed that the children lived in constant fear of their father, with some pretending to have autism in an attempt to avoid his violence. Abuse also took place in public.
The case came to light when the two eldest children went to a Garda station and disclosed the abuse. Gardaí subsequently took all six children into care. The parents denied the allegations at the time, accusing their children of lying.
Crucial evidence included 180 covert audio recordings made by the children, 29 extracts of which were played in court. These recordings captured repeated verbal and physical abuse. The court also heard of a 999 call made after the eldest son collapsed following a beating, during which his father falsely claimed the incident occurred after the boy returned home from work.
In a victim impact statement, the eldest son, now 21 and living under a new name, told the court that his childhood had been turned into “a prison” by his parents’ violence, neglect and cruelty. Audio evidence was also presented of the father humiliating his teenage daughter, belittling her personal life and self-worth.
The court was told that even the youngest child, aged three at the time, suffered severe physical abuse and believed himself to be “the worst boy in the world”. Since being removed from his parents’ care, he has made significant progress and is now described as happy and thriving.
Judge McMullen acknowledged the complex emotions of the children, noting that one daughter, now 19, expressed continued affection for her parents despite their actions. She described several of the children as unusually articulate, intelligent and courageous, and said their actions helped protect their younger siblings from further harm.
Both parents pleaded guilty at an early stage of the trial in May. The judge said their sentences were partially reduced in recognition of their guilty pleas, engagement in therapy and efforts to address their behaviour.
The father was originally sentenced to six years and three months, with part of the sentence suspended, resulting in an effective term of five and a half years. The mother received a sentence of three years and nine months, with nine months suspended, leaving an effective sentence of three years.
