McDonald’s to Open 200+ New Restaurants in the UK and Ireland, Creating Over 24,000 Jobs

Dublin: McDonald’s has announced plans to open over 200 new restaurants across the United Kingdom and Ireland, a move expected to create more than 24,000 jobs. As part of its expansion strategy, McDonald’s will introduce new formats, including “drive-to” and smaller stores, while also opening more locations in town and city centres. This initiative is part of the company’s broader goal to add 10,000 new restaurants globally by the end of 2027, increasing its worldwide presence to 50,000 locations.

The UK expansion, which represents a 14% increase in the number of McDonald’s outlets and employees, involves an investment of £1 billion ($1.3 billion). Despite a recent decline in global sales, including a 1% drop in same-store sales for the April-June 2024 quarter, McDonald’s remains optimistic about its growth prospects. The company’s sales have been impacted by fewer customers dining out amid rising food prices, making eating out a luxury for many.

Additionally, McDonald’s has faced competition in the UK, where it was surpassed by Greggs as the leading provider of food-to-go breakfasts last year.
