A Mexican navy training vessel, the Cuauhtémoc, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday, damaging its masts during a promotional visit to New York City. The ship’s tallest mast struck the bridge, partially collapsing and causing significant disruption.
Eyewitness videos captured the dramatic moment as the mast snapped and individuals appeared to dangle from the rigging. Two people were reportedly removed from the ship on stretchers, though the New York Fire Department has not confirmed the number or severity of injuries.
The Cuauhtémoc, a 297-foot-long training vessel with 277 personnel on board, was on a global tour that included stops in 15 countries. The Mexican Navy has confirmed the incident, noting that the ship is now under review and support is being provided.
The Brooklyn Bridge, a historic landmark and heavily trafficked route, remained busy at the time of the collision. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
