Dublin: Ireland’s Health Minister has proposed funding for hospitals to build and purchase homes for nurses and other staff. The minister stated that the next budget will include hospital-related housing. The minister revealed that they are thinking of finding accommodation locally and building a new house for the employees.
Minister Stephen Donnelly stated that the HSE would also consider providing housing near the hospital for healthcare workers and workers who must travel long distances. Hospitals are already looking at different properties in the area.
NMBI board of directors member Shalbin Joseph and office bearers of the nurses’ trade union, INMO, demanded that accommodation be provided for health workers on HSE’s lands and unused properties.
A Labour TD stated that it was too late.
However, Labour leader Ivana Bacik spoke out against the TD government’s plan. TD criticised the plan as being too late. She stated that the HSE’s head has already stated that providing housing facilities is not something they can handle. According to the Labour leader, the housing crisis has affected all sectors, not just nurses. Labour’s deputy leader said the public service was affected, starting with the recruitment and retention of gardaí and teachers.
