Dublin: The government has revealed the details of Ireland’s new plastic recycling scheme. The government has announced a deposit return scheme for plastic bottles and cans. The scheme encourages people to recycle beverage bottles and cans. Ireland’s CLG will begin implementing the scheme in February 2024.
Deposit Return Scheme
Under the deposit return scheme, all drink purchasers pay a small deposit on plastic bottle and can containers. Customers receive their money back by returning these to the retailer’s recycling collection point. This amount can also be received by the return machine, donated to charity, or spent at the store.
The deposit is 15 cents for cans and bottles up to 500 ml and 25 cents for cans and bottles larger than 500 ml. Bottles and cans can be returned at any shop, not just where the drinks were purchased. Shops and retailers must register for this scheme and pay a small fee.
Registration is mandatory.
All manufacturers and retailers will be legally bound to register with the scheme on re-turn. Registration can be done on the website.
The project’s goal is to achieve the EU’s recycling target.
According to Minister Ossian Smyth, the scheme is self-paying, and everyone who handles the goods will benefit from their efforts. It is estimated that approximately 1.9 billion bottles and cans are used in Ireland each year, but the EU recycling target is not being met. “A target has been set for 2025 and 2030, and this scheme aims to meet it,” the minister clarified.
