Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan is aiming to implement a comprehensive plan to alleviate congestion in Dublin city centre by August. The primary objective of the Dublin City Centre Transport Plan is to address the issue of congestion, particularly targeting the significant portion of street users who are merely passing through the area.
Key measures proposed include the restriction of private cars and commercial vehicles from certain parts of the north and south quays, reserving these areas exclusively for public transport. Additionally, the introduction of “bus gates” near O’Connell Bridge and traffic flow adjustments are expected to contribute to congestion reduction.
Further initiatives outlined in the plan involve establishing traffic-free zones on Parliament Street and creating new civic plazas at prominent locations such as the Custom House and Lincoln Place. Significant funding, including €500,000 allocated to the traffic-free plaza at College Green and a €290 million “active travel” fund, will support projects aimed at enhancing cycling infrastructure in Dublin and other urban centres nationwide.
Minister Ryan anticipates that these proposed changes will promote increased walking and cycling within the city. The plan is scheduled to be presented to Dublin City Councillors for review and approval.
