DUBLIN: COVID-19 deaths and cases are on the rise in Ireland. The National Public Health Emergency Team today confirmed that more than 1,000 deaths and more than 1 million cases have been registered in Ireland in January alone.
The shocking figures were released by the NPHET after 1,414 new cases and 79 deaths were reported in Ireland yesterday.
The death toll in the country now stands at 3,292 and the number of cases has reached 195,303.
Of the cases notified yesterday, 667 were men and 742 were women. 59% are under 45 years of age and the median age is 39 years old.
The capital recorded 608 new cases. Of the remaining cases, 105 were in Cork, 96 in Galway, 65 in Meath, 59 in Donegal and the remaining 481 cases are spread across all other counties.
There were 1,492 patients with COVID-19 in hospital, with 211 in ICU. Ireland’s 14-day incidence rate per 100,000 people is now 536.6.
“We have reported more cases in one month than we experienced throughout 2020. This shows just how quickly this disease can spread and how much it can impact public health,” Dr. Tony Holohan said.
“The next few weeks need to see us maintain compliance with all of the measures that are in place so that we can get to levels of the disease that are as low as possible,” he added.
