More than 5.5 million cigarettes seized at the Dublin Port

The Customs officials seized more than 5.5 million cigarettes branded ‘Rothmans’ at the Dublin Port.

The seized cigarettes were smuggled in a trailer which came from Rotterdam, Netherlands, and were labelled as “solar panels”.

The smuggled goods originated from Ukraine and were seized yesterday. Officials said that the cigarettes have an estimate retail value of €2.9m.

Customs officials said that the investigations are ongoing. It was with the help of detector dog Kelly, that Customs were able to find the trailer and discover the item.

The move was a part of the Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the smuggling of illegal tobacco products into the State.

The Revenue had asked the businesses or members of the public to contact them, if they have any information regarding smuggling.
