More than 70 gardai officers currently suspended, with 17 dismissed over past three years

DUBLIN: An Garda Síochána has revealed that more than 70 officers are currently suspended from the force for violating the Code of Conduct.

It also said that a Garda officer has been suspended from duty for more than eight years and 17 police officers, including seven probationers, have been fired in the past three years. Two of them were dismissed in 2018.

An Garda Síochána said all officers were subject to a code of conduct, with any suspected violation the subject of an investigation. Violations are classified as minor, less serious, or serious, with disciplinary actions recorded in Garda files. Penalties under Garda regulations include dismissal, reduction in rank, a temporary reduction in pay, caution, or advice.

A spokesman said that “internal Garda discipline procedures are provided for under the Garda Síochána (Discipline) Regulations 2007.” He added that these regulations clearly state the process and procedures to be followed in all cases.

An Garda Síochána says some suspension cases can last up to a decade. The unit also revealed that one Gardai officer is suspended for eight to ten years and another for six to eight years. However, no one has been suspended for more than 10 years.
