Most of those illegally staying in Ireland were Pakistanis and Chinese

Dublin: The government revealed that most of those who stayed illegally in Ireland were Pakistanis and Chinese. The government’s once-in-a-generation scheme to legalise those who have stayed in the country illegally has shed light on information about illegal immigrants in Ireland. The Department of Justice reports that 97% of applications received have been successfully processed.

The highest number of applicants were Brazilian nationals. 1,504 people applied for legalisation of their illegal status. There were 1,307 Pakistani applicants and 1,159 Chinese applicants. In addition, there were applicants from the Philippines (751), Nigeria (446), and India (313). The department stated that there are still 1,700 applications to be processed and that the complexity of these applications will take longer to process.

The scheme to legalise long-term undocumented migrants began on January 31, 2022, and ended on July 31, 2022.

The scheme gave such people the opportunity to work legally, apply for citizenship in a timely manner, and obtain citizenship status. The application fee for families was €700 and €550 for individuals. This scheme instilled great confidence in those who came to work and live in Ireland, considering it their own country.

6,548 applications were received involving 8,311 persons including 1,108 children. Of these, 4,857 applications were disposed of, and 4,796 applicants received a favourable decision. A negative decision was made in the case of 94 people, while 47 people withdrew their applications for various reasons.
