The Department of Chemistry at the world-renowned University of Cambridge will be named after Yusuf Hameed, an Indian scientist.
Yusuf Hameed, 85, is an Indian scientist and chairman of Cipla Limited, a leading Mumbai – based pharmaceutical company. Until 2050, the chemistry department will be named after Hamid.
Yusuf Hameed is an alumnus of the University of Cambridge. Cipla was started in 2001 under Yusuf Hameed to distribute HIV / AIDS drugs to developing countries at low cost.
Cambridge gave me an educational base in chemistry and taught me how to live. It showed me how to contribute to the community. As a scholarship student, I am happy to be able to support future generations of students. I am always indebted to this great institution and all that it stands for, Yusuf Hameed said.
Under Yusuf Hameed’s leadership, Cipla has been instrumental in supplying low – cost HIV / AIDS drugs to developing countries, as well as providing affordable drugs during the Covid era.
In 2004, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by Christ College. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of the highest civilian honors of India in 2005, an honorary fellowship of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2012, and an honorary doctorate in honorary science from the University of Cambridge in 2014.
