National television in Ireland insults Christian faith; Church leaders have come out in protest

DUBLIN: The Irish Catholic Church has come out against a skit that has been broadcast on an Irish national television in a way that denigrates Christian faith.

A skit featuring a joke about God’s arrest for raping a Middle Eastern woman was aired yesterday as a countdown show on national television in conjunction with Christmas events. The mock news is that God has become the latest person to be involved in sexual harassment scandals.

The outrageous skit was made by former RTE newsreader Aengus Mac Grianna. Archbishop Eamon Martin, head of the Irish Catholic Church, has called on RTE to immediately remove the provocative clip.

The archbishop called on all to condemn the irresponsible move. Following the Archbishop’s tweet, many people came out in support and opposition to the incident.

Last year, a referendum on the decriminalisation of blasphemy was passed in Ireland with 65% support.
