Nearly 100 Pubs to Be Redeveloped Into 300 New Homes..

Dublin: Nearly 100 pubs are set to be redeveloped, creating almost 300 new homes, as part of a broader initiative to convert vacant commercial properties into residential units. Between 2018 and 2023, over 1,100 notifications were received by local authorities for such conversions, potentially leading to more than 2,700 new homes nationwide, according to the Department of Housing.

In 2022, planning exemptions were extended to allow vacant pubs to be converted into residences. Since then, 92 notifications have been submitted to create 295 new homes from former pubs. Overall, in 2023, 267 notifications were received, with the potential to add 650 new homes, including 136 from converted pubs.

Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien emphasised that converting vacant buildings into homes is a key aspect of the Government’s Housing for All programme, aimed at increasing housing supply, addressing vacancy issues, and revitalising urban areas.
