Yeti Airlines’ 72-seater passenger jet crashed in Nepal’s Pokhara as it neared a freshly built airport in the tourist destination.
The plane accident in Nepal killed at least 66 people, making it the country’s worst flying disaster in three decades. Officials stated they had recovered the bodies of 68 people onboard a 72-seater passenger plane operated by Yeti Airlines before calling off the search for the day. According to Tek Bahadur K.C., a senior administrative officer in Kaski district, the death toll was reduced from 68 on Sunday to 66 following a recount early Monday morning.
The twin-engine ATR 72 plane was flying from Kathmandu to Pokhara, a vacation destination 200 kilometres west of the capital, when it crashed while attempting to land at a recently opened airport.
The plane was carrying 68 passengers, including 15 foreign nationalities, as well as four crew members, according to Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority. There were five Indians, four Russians, two South Koreans, and one each from Ireland, Australia, Argentina, and France among the foreigners. Four of the five Indians were from the Uttar Pradesh district of Ghazipur and had travelled to Nepal on vacation on January 13.
Sonu Jaiswal (35), Anil Kumar Rajbhar (27), Abhishek Kushwaha (27), and Vishal Sharma (22) all acquaintances and residents of Ghazipur and Sanjay Jaiswal (26), from Bihar’s Sitamarhi, were among the Indians on board.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has formed a team to investigate the disaster, with a report due in 45 days. BEA, France’s aviation accident investigation agency, said it will take part in the inquiry and collaborate with all other parties involved.
