DUBLIN: Nestlé, the world’s largest food company, has admitted that about 60% of its products are unhealthy, and that some of its product ranges will never be healthy.
According to the Financial Times, a UK business daily, Nestle’s products have a rating of only 3.5% on Australia’s one-to-five health star rating system. About 70% of the company’s overall food and beverage portfolio failed to achieve this rating.
The majority of its beverages, confectionery, ice cream, and pizzas are rated unhealthy. However, the significant range of baby food, infant formula, and maternal nutrition products that it manufactures in Ireland has not been included in this report.
Nestle has recently launched thousands of products for children and families. Nestle’s shares has climbed 9% in the last year, but it was slightly down following the current report.
Meanwhile, Nestle officials said that they have begun steps to improve the quality of their products. “We have made significant improvements to our products . . . [but] our portfolio still underperforms against external definitions of health in a landscape where regulatory pressure and consumer demands are skyrocketing,” Nestle’s presentation stated, according to the Financial Times.
