New bridge across the River Corrib in Galway

Galway: A new bridge across the Corrib River has become a reality in Galway, the first such bridge to exist in 30 years, with the aim of reducing congestion and carbon emissions.

The bridge is located in the city centre, 20 metres below the Salmon Weir Bridge, between Gaol Road and Newtownsmith. The bridge for pedestrians and cyclists is part of a new transportation corridor in the city.

A Board Plenary in 2020 ruled that the construction of the bridge would not have a significant impact on the environment. The bridge received planning permission in August 2021. Construction work on the site had been underway for months.
