New cases of COVID-19 are rising day by day in Ireland; 20 deaths and new 8,248 cases confirmed; South African variant also detected

DUBLIN: Deaths and new cases related to the COVID-19 in Ireland are rising day by day.

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) has confirmed 8,248 new cases of COVID-19 in Ireland. This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 135,884.

A further 20 is confirmed to have died of COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 2,327.

The health department has asked people to be extra vigilant after all three cases of the new COVID-19 variant, which originated in South Africa, were found in Ireland.

Of the cases confirmed today, 3,834 are men and 4,375 are women. 61% are under the age of 45, while the median age is 38 years old.

The capital registered 3,013 new virus cases. Of the remaining cases; 1,374 in Cork, 538 in Limerick, 314 in Kildare, 310 in Donegal. The remaining 2,699 cases are spread across all other counties.   

There are currently 1,180 people hospitalised with COVID-19, including 109 in ICU. There were 116 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.
