New Changes to Employment Permits to Take Effect on September 2…

Dublin: New changes to Ireland’s employment permit system, aimed at enhancing flexibility, will take effect on Monday, September 2. The updated regulations, part of the Employment Permits Act, introduce several key modifications.

Permit holders will now be allowed to change employers after nine months, and a new seasonal employment permit will cater to industries with seasonal needs, like fruit picking. Subcontractors will gain access to the permit system, and additional conditions such as training and accommodation support will be required for permit holders.

Non-consultant hospital doctors will be eligible for permits allowing them to work at multiple sites, and permit holders can be promoted without needing a new permit. The regulations also expand quotas, granting 500 permits to the home care sector and 250 to lineworkers for ESB Networks.

The government emphasised that these changes will make the permit system more adaptable to evolving labour market and business needs. Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Peter Burke, highlighted the benefits for both employers and employees, while Minister of State for Business, Employment, and Retail, Emer Higgins, noted that the reforms will help attract more international talent to Ireland.
