New Indian Ambassador to Ireland appointed; Senior diplomat Akhilesh Mishra succeeds Sandeep Kumar

DUBLIN: Senior diplomat Akhilesh Mishra has been appointed as the new Indian Ambassador to Ireland. Mishra, a member of the 1989 Indian Foreign Service- batch, is currently on special duty in the foreign ministry. He is expected to take up the charge shortly.

Mr Mishra has been an officer on special duty at the secretary level since March 2021. He was Additional Secretary in the Development Partnership Administration (DPA) from February 2020 to March 2021. During this time, he was in charge of developmental assistance to foreign countries on projects such as the Indian Grant and Lines of Credit and the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation.

He was the Director General of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations for one year from February 2019 to February 2020.

Mr Mishra also served as the Indian Ambassador to the Maldives from January 2016 to February 2019 and as Counsel General in Toronto, Canada from August 2013 to January 2016.

Indian community in Ireland will be deeply grateful to Mr Kumar

Indian Ambassador Sandeep Kumar, who has rendered invaluable service to the Indian community in Ireland, is stepping down. He has been the Ambassador since November 2018.

Sandeep Kumar, a 1985 batch IFS member, will go down in history as a man who worked tirelessly to uplift the dignity of the Indian community in Ireland and India.

Mr Kumar arrived in Ireland after successfully completing various missions in Croatia, Hong Kong, Paris, Cape Town and Kabul.

He also served in the UNDP on deputation in Afghanistan. There he was in charge of police reforms. From 2013 to 2015, he was the Joint Secretary of the West Asia and North African Division in the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also served as the Indian Ambassador to the Republic of Croatia.

No one will ever forget Sandeep Kumar, who worked tirelessly to reach out to members of Ireland’s Indian community and ensure their well-being, as well as to strengthen cultural and trade ties between India and Ireland.
