New leader of DUP in Northern Ireland will be elected today

BELFAST: The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) in Northern Ireland will elect its new leader today.

Long-serving MP Jeffrey Donaldson and current Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots are the two candidates competing for the DUP’s senior role.

The first leadership contest in the party’s 50-year history follows the announcement by DUP leader and Northern Ireland’s First Minister Arlene Foster of her intention to step down. Ms. Foster will step down as DUP leader at the end of the month and as First Minister at the end of the next month.

A secret, remote ballot to choose the new DUP leader and deputy leader will begin at 11 am today. The DUP’s 36-member electoral college, which comprises 28 Northern Ireland Assembly members and eight MPs, will vote today. The party’s outgoing leader is also expected to vote in today’s leadership election.

The result will be announced today at 5 pm by DUP Chairman Maurice Morrow from the DUP headquarters in East Belfast.
