New Public Service Obligation Levy to Add Nearly €40 to Household Electricity Bills and €155 to Small Commercial Customers Starting October 1

Dublin: Starting October 1, households will face an additional annual charge of nearly €40 on their electricity bills due to a new Public Service Obligation (PSO) Levy, aimed at subsidising renewable energy generation. Small commercial customers will see an increase of approximately €155 over the year.

The energy regulator, the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU), announced that the PSO Levy will total €251.79 million, nearly €27 million more than the previous estimate. This levy, which had been set to zero for the last period, will now amount to €3.23 per month for domestic users and €12.91 for small businesses.

The increase is attributed to a review of data from energy suppliers, although changes in foreign exchange rates and fuel prices helped mitigate the rise. The PSO Levy supports renewable energy projects, essential for Ireland’s carbon reduction goals.

The CRU noted that, while high energy prices have been burdensome, switching suppliers and improving energy efficiency can offer savings. Current electricity bills are approximately 70–80% higher than pre-crisis levels. The government is expected to continue energy credits and may decide on extending a VAT reduction on electricity and gas bills in the upcoming budget.
