No need to submit passport for GNIB card renewal; Justice Department said the procedure would be eased

DUBLIN: The Justice Department says you do not need to send a passport with your application to renew your Irish residency card.

Officials said the new law would apply to applicants in Dublin and elsewhere. But those living in the Dublin area should scan the pages with their photo and address in the passport and send it with the online application.

Complaints were high that passports sent with the application were extensively lost. However, the authorities said that the passport was waived as a way to handle the applications more easily.

Hundreds of people who had to travel during Christmas and New Year had complained that the renewal had not been done even after more than a month of submitting applications. Delays in handling renewed applications received in large quantities can be reduced with new measures.

However, to apply for a new registration, one has to go directly to the respective registration offices.

The registration offices, which were closed following the Level 5 lockdown, will be reopened from today, officials said.

The notice states that first time registration applicants, which were postponed during the lockdown, will now be given priority.
